Belize launches project on cleaner and more efficient fuels and vehicles

The Government of Belize has launched a national project to strengthen national fuel quality and vehicle emission standards and to promote automotive fuel economy for CO2 and non-CO2 emission improvements. This project will support Belize’s Sustainable Energy Strategic Plan and their INDC contributions related to transport, and was launched with an inception workshop from the 14th-15th of November 2016.

This project is part of the Global Fuel Economy Initiative (GFEI) and the Partnership for Clean Fuels and Vehicles (PCFV). The first phase will include the formation of a national working group to support the development of low sulphur fuels (50ppm or below) and vehicle emissions standards; and securing auto registration data for the calculation of a national auto fuel economy baseline. GFEI baselines are usually calculated from 2005 and trends for subsequent years where data is available.

The Ministry of Public Service, Energy and Public Utilities of Belize will lead this project, with support from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and their regional technical partners, CEGESTI, Centro Mario Molina Chile (CMMCh), and the University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech).
