YouTubePeru workshop promotes cleaner and more efficient vehicles
The Ministry of Environment of Peru (MINAM), with support from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Centro Mario Molina Chile (CMMCh), held a two day workshop from the 18th-19th of February 2016. MINAM has been working with the Global Fuel Economy Initiative (GFEI) since 2012 to promote more fuel efficient vehicles in Peru.
Over 40 national participants took part from various public and private institutions related to transportation, energy efficiency and fuels. This national working group convened to reach a consensus between the government sector, civil society and private companies in the implementation of regulation instruments for the introduction of cleaner and more efficient fuels and vehicle technologies.
On the first day of the workshop a legislative proposal was presented for discussion to promote energy efficiency of new vehicles imported into Peru thus decreasing CO2 emissions. This proposal represents a significant contribution to the emissions reduction commitment of greenhouse gases announced by the government at the recent COP21.
The second day of the workshop was a presentation of the results of the diesel particulate filter (DPF) pilot project in Lima. Peru is a member of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) since 2013 and this DPF project was implemented by UNEP and CMMCh through the Heavy Duty Diesel Initiative of the CCAC which aims to reduce black carbon emissions. Lima already has standards for low sulphur diesel and this pilot project aimed to propose additional methods to further reduce emissions from the public transportation system. The use of diesel particulate filters was shown to significantly reduce particulate emissions from vehicles and equipment using diesel engines.
Both proposals were well received by the participants and further to the discussions these will be revised and presented to the government for further consideration and action.
