GFEI baseline supports Dominican Republic climate commitment

Dominican Republic, through its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to the Paris Climate Agreement has a commitment to reduce greenhouse gases by 25% by 2050 in comparison to 2010.

The Global Fuel Economy Initiative, through UN Environment, is supporting the government to explore ways of cutting emissions through cleaner, more efficient transport. On 23rd July 2019, a workshop was held, hosted by the National Council on Climate Change and Clean Development Mechanism with the support of the Minister of Energy and Mines. The country has established the relevance of this project which will help the country to improve the air quality, reduce the pollutant emissions and mitigate the greenhouse gases from transport.

The fuel economy baseline result was presented during this workshop. The baseline was developed for a period between 2005 and 2015 and showed a gradually decrease in the average fuel consumption of the vehicle fleet since 2013. The research also highlighted a 20% difference between the fuel consumption of pick-ups in comparison with light-duty vehicles. This workshop has been an opportunity to strengthen the partnerships with private and public stakeholders that can promote the introduction of cleaner and more efficient vehicles in Dominican Republic. The GFEI project will continue in Dominican Republic in the second quarter of 2020 with further capacity building, and the development of policies for vehicle labelling and more energy efficient vehicles.
