YouTubeParaguay sets fuel economy baseline
In July 2019, GFEI supported a workshop in Paraguay on cleaner vehicles and fuels, organized by UN Environment. The workshop was held by the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (MADES).
The opening speech was given by the General Director of Environmental Management (DGGA) of the MADES, Dr. Hugo Piccinini, who thanked the call and stressed the importance of having a commitment to caring for the environment, also urged to promote information to create awareness of the danger that represents both poor fuel quality and the quality of vehicles.
During the workshop the country fuel economy baseline was presented to public and private stakeholders developed by the Universidad de Asunción. The fuel economy baseline period covers the period 2005 to 2018 and includes the new and used vehicle registered in the vehicle fleet. 80% of all registered vehicles were second-hand cars, with significant impacts on the average fuel economy of vehicles. GFEI is now supporting next steps in the country to develop and discuss a policy framework to the decrease in the entry of used vehicles, as well as increase the numbers of electric vehicles. The GFEI project will continue in Paraguay in the second quarter of 2020 with further capacity building, and the development of policies for vehicle labelling and more energy efficient vehicles.
